Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • â…“ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste (about ½ teaspoon each)
  • 1 garlic clove, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (for gravy)
  • ½ onion, diced
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups beef stock or beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, Italian seasoning, egg, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 oval patties, each about ¾ inch thick.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and sear until golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes per side.
  4. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until golden, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and let it melt. Sprinkle in 2 tablespoons of flour and whisk continuously.
  7. Gradually pour in beef stock, whisking until smooth. Stir in 1 tablespoon ketchup, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper.
  8. Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer, return the steaks to the pan, and cover. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until steaks are thoroughly cooked.

Notes

Serve over mashed potatoes or rice; can be made with lean ground turkey for a lighter version.
