Ingredients

Scale
  • ¾ cup flour
  • ¾ cup cornmeal
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 Tbsp cold butter, cubed
  • Oil for frying (e.g., vegetable or peanut oil)

Instructions

  1. Preheat about 2 inches of oil in a large skillet to roughly 365°F.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and pepper.
  3. Add in the egg and buttermilk, stirring until just combined, then fold in the cubed butter.
  4. Drop rounded teaspoons of the batter carefully into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes.
  5. Remove fried hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve warm.

Notes

Watch for the right oil temperature to prevent greasy hush puppies. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 2–3 days or freeze for up to a month.
