Preparation

  • Begin by heating the vegetable oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. The oil should shimmer but not smoke.
  • Generously season the beef brisket with salt and black pepper on all sides.
  • Place the brisket in the hot oil and sear it for 3-4 minutes on each side until it develops a rich, golden-brown crust. Remove the brisket from the pot and set it aside.
  • In the same pot, add the sliced red onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until softened and translucent.
  • Stir in the smoked paprika, ground cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 30 seconds.
  • Add in the dark brown sugar, honey, and water. Stir well to create a gooey mixture.
  • Stir in the crushed garlic and chopped tomatoes. Mix thoroughly.
  • Carefully pour in the hot beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, dark soy sauce, and brown sauce. Stir until everything is combined.
  • Gently place the brisket back into the pot, ensuring it is submerged in the flavorful sauce. Cover the pot with a lid.

Cooking

  • Transfer the Dutch oven to a preheated oven set at 160°C (320°F). Bake the brisket for 3-4 hours until it is incredibly tender.
  • After removing from the oven, let the brisket rest for 10 minutes. Then, shred the meat within the pot and mix it with the sauce.
  • Serve warm, garnished with fresh herbs if desired, along with your favorite side dishes.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider marinating the brisket in sauce ingredients the night before. Adjust cayenne pepper for desired heat level. A splash of apple cider vinegar can brighten flavors. Using a slow cooker is an excellent alternative.
