  • 1 cup half and half Enhances the creaminess of the sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Brightens the dish and balances richness.
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste To enhance the flavors.

Instructions
 

Cooking the Pasta

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the medium pasta shells and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Preparing the Sauce

  • In a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat, melt the unsalted butter.
  • Add the minced garlic and shallot, stirring for about 2 minutes until fragrant.

Making the Roux

  • Sprinkle in the all-purpose flour and whisk constantly for about 1 minute until lightly browned.

Adding Dairy Ingredients

  • Gradually whisk in the whole milk, half and half, and Dijon mustard. Stir until the sauce thickens slightly, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  • If the sauce becomes too thick, add additional milk as needed.

Combining Ingredients

  • Season the sauce with kosher salt and black pepper to taste. Add the cooked pasta shells, chopped broccoli, and grated cheddar cheese. Stir thoroughly until the cheese is melted, about 3 to 4 minutes.

Serving

  • Taste for seasoning and adjust if necessary. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

For a crispy finish, top with panko breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter before baking at 350°F for 15-20 minutes.
