Ingredients

  • 2 cups Harina PAN (pre-cooked white cornmeal) This fine, golden flour is the heart of your arepas.
  • 2.5 cups warm water Use warm rather than hot water for achieving the right dough consistency.
  • 1 tsp salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil For pan-frying to give a crispy exterior.

Fillings and Optional Ingredients

  • 0.5 cups shredded cheese Introduces a creamy, savory note.
  • Chia seeds or flaxseeds Adds fiber.
  • Herbs or spices (e.g., cumin, oregano) Elevates the flavor profile.

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the warm water and salt, allowing the salt to dissolve fully.
  • Gradually stir in the Harina PAN and knead gently for 2 to 3 minutes until you have a smooth and pliable dough.
  • Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rest for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Shape and Cook Arepas

  • Divide the rested dough into 6 to 8 equal balls and flatten into discs about ½ inch thick.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat, add a small amount of vegetable oil, then cook the arepas for 5 to 6 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Optional Baking

  • For extra fluffiness, transfer the cooked arepas to a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for an additional 10 minutes.

Serving

  • Slice open and fill your arepas with desired ingredients such as avocado, chicken salad, or cheese.

Notes

Ensure the dough is moist and do not skip the resting period for the best texture. Serve with avocado salsa or pico de gallo.
