Ingredients

For the crust

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour providing a perfect base
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter softened, adding richness
  • 0.5 cups sugar ensuring a delightful sweetness
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt enhancing the flavors
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest brightening the dish

For the filling

  • 1 cup cream cheese softened, for a creamy texture
  • 1 cup powdered sugar adding sweetness and smoothness
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice contributing a zesty tang
  • 1 cup fresh figs chopped, for natural sweetness and texture
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract offering warmth
  • 0.25 teaspoon almond extract adding a hint of nuttiness
  • 1 large egg binding the ingredients together

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch by 9-inch baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, softened butter, sugar, salt, and lemon zest. Mix until the mixture resembles a crumbly texture.
  • Press this crumbly mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes, or until it turns lightly golden.

Filling

  • Beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add in the powdered sugar while mixing well.
  • Stir in the lemon juice, vanilla extract, almond extract, and the egg until smooth.
  • Gently fold in the chopped fresh figs.
  • Pour the filling over the baked crust, spreading it evenly.
  • Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes, or until the center is set and a knife inserted comes out clean.

Cooling and Serving

  • Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting them into squares.
  • Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for a smoother batter. If using dried figs, soak them in warm water for about ten minutes. Adding a dash of cardamom to the crust can introduce intriguing flavor.
