For the Gravy

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced The star of the gravy.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Helps thicken the gravy.
  • 1 cup beef broth Creates a rich sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon dry cooking sherry (optional) Adds complexity to the gravy.
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt (for final seasoning) Adjusts final flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  • Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into oval patties with a slight indent in the center.

Cooking

  • Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Set the cooked patties aside on a plate.
  • In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until golden and softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for about a minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and optional cooking sherry, simmering the mixture.
  • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, allowing them to simmer for about 2 minutes.
  • Adjust seasoning with additional seasoned salt if necessary.

Notes

Chill the patties for 30 minutes before cooking to hold their shape. Consider adding spices like smoked paprika for added flavor. Serve with mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
