Instructions

Making the Rolls

  • Activate the yeast: Start by combining the warm water and active dry yeast in a bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk and melted butter together, then add this to the yeast mixture.
  • Add dry ingredients: Stir in the red velvet cake mix, all-purpose flour, Kosher salt, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Roll out the dough: After rising, roll the dough onto a floured surface into a rectangle, about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Add filling: Spread a thin layer of melted butter over the dough, then sprinkle a mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon evenly on top.
  • Shape the rolls: Carefully roll the dough tightly from one side to the other and slice it into 12 equal pieces.
  • Second rise: Arrange the sliced rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.

Frosting the Rolls

  • Prepare the frosting: In a bowl, combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk. Whip until you have a smooth, creamy consistency.
  • Frost the rolls: Once the rolls are cool, generously spread the frosting over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides.

Notes

To elevate your rolls, consider folding in chopped nuts or chocolate chips. For a lighter version, swap half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for later enjoyment.
