Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a bowl, combine the mayonnaise, pickle relish, ketchup, sugar, and white vinegar. Stir until smooth and refrigerate.
  • Spread softened butter on the insides of the hamburger buns and toast them on a skillet until golden.
  • Divide the ground beef into 8 equal parts to form thin patties, making a small indent in the center of each.

Cooking

  • Heat butter and vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Season the patties with salt and pepper, and cook for 2-3 minutes per side.
  • After flipping the patties, drizzle yellow mustard over them and place a slice of American cheese atop each.

Assembly

  • Start with the bottom bun, add sauce, lettuce, onions, pickles, and one beef patty.
  • Place another bottom bun on the first patty, layer again with sauce, lettuce, onions, pickles, and a second patty.
  • Top with the final bun and serve immediately.

Notes

You can prepare the sauce a day ahead for deeper flavor. Consider using turkey or chicken for a healthier option, and add toppings like avocado or grilled mushrooms for a unique twist.
