Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a small baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  • In a mixing bowl, stir together the melted butter, sugar, egg yolk, vanilla, and red food coloring until smooth.
  • Sprinkle the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt over the wet mixture. Stir until just combined.
  • Flatten the dough in the bowl and divide it in half, then into 3 equal portions for 6 cookies.
  • Roll each portion into a ball and roll in extra granulated sugar.
  • Place the dough balls evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.

Baking

  • Bake for 10–12 minutes until they spread, crackle, and look dry on top.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before moving them to a wire rack.
  • After 10 minutes, press a white chocolate heart into the center of each cookie.
  • Chill the cookies in the fridge for about 30 minutes to help the candy set.

Notes

Use a good quality gel food coloring for the best color. Spoon the flour into your measuring cup and level it off for accuracy. For fun, drizzle with fondant icing or add chocolate chips.
