Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 1 sleeve Saltine Crackers (about 40 crackers) These light and salty crackers serve as the perfect base, providing a contrasting crunch and a hint of saltiness.
  • 1 cup unsalted butter Rich and creamy, it’s essential for creating that luscious toffee-like texture.
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar This adds sweetness and depth, enhancing the overall flavor of the toffee.
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips Rich and melty, these chips create a decadent layer that complements the toffee perfectly.
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional; pecans or walnuts) Add these for an extra crunch and a nutty flavor that elevates your toffee experience.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.

Cooking

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar, stirring constantly until it bubbles (about 3 minutes).
  • Pour the hot mixture over the crackers, ensuring they are fully coated.
  • Bake for 5 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips on top; let them melt for a minute before spreading evenly.
  • Allow to cool completely before breaking into pieces.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet. Consider adding a sprinkle of sea salt on top of the melted chocolate for a gourmet touch. If you’re feeling adventurous, try incorporating crushed peppermint candies on top during the holidays for a festive twist!
